HEAVYWEIGHT boxer James Singh is embracing a fresh chapter in his boxing career after joining Singh’s Boxing Club ahead of the Bluewater Boxing Promotion at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, on October 23.
Singh, who previously trained with Maui Bay Boxing Club, is now under the guidance of former Fiji boxing champion Binnu Singh Snr as he prepares to face Sainivalati Ratu in the heavyweight bout.
For Singh, the move is more than a change of training camp.
He believes working alongside Binnu Singh Snr is helping him rediscover his best form and push himself beyond his limits.
“This is not a redemption for me to do anything. This is a redemption for me,” Singh said.
Singh acknowledged the experience of his new mentor, saying Binnu had played an important role in bringing out the best in him.
He admitted training under the former champion has been challenging, particularly because of the intensity expected from the current generation of boxers.
“It’s very hard compared to the training they did in their times,” Singh said.
Despite the demands, Singh said he and his teammates were determined to continue pushing themselves and produce their best performances.
He also expects a competitive contest against Ratu, whom he knows well from training.
Singh said he would respect Ratu’s preparation but insisted the relationship would change once fight week arrives.
“He’s my opponent on the day of the fight and I will not know him on that day,” Singh said.
With the support of Binnu Singh Snr and the Singh’s Boxing Club behind him, Singh is looking forward to stepping into the ring and giving his mentor something to smile about.
