Teachers are to knock off by 3.30pm, according to Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh.

This is in response to reports emerging of some teachers being instructed not to leave the school premises before 5pm, sparking debate over their working hours.

“Teachers’ working hours are only from 8 to 3.30pm,” said Mr Singh adding that teachers were also on duty during lunchtime and required to remain on the school grounds throughout the day.

“Teachers cannot leave school during lunch time, they must stay at school.”

He said their lunch hour was considered part of their duty.

“They are to oversee the students’ movement.

“So, lunch hour is regarded as their working hour.”

Mr Singh said teachers could leave an hour earlier after the students leave for home.
