EMOTIONS were high as Fiji’s Special Olympics gladiators were farewelled by partner Digicel Fiji Ltd at their head office in Suva yesterday before they leave for the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi and Dubai next week.
The 35-member squad of athletes and officials will be Fiji’s largest contingent sent to the Special Olympics and were farewelled by Digicel Fiji chief executive officer Mike Greig as they hosted to a morning tea.
“Some moments can leave us speechless,” said Special Olympics Fiji president Bishwa Sidal. “Seeing the amount of support from our sponsors and fans behind the team really gives the athletes an extra boost.”
Digicel had earlier in the year given them $100000 to aid the campaign Sidal said the team was in high spirits and the message to his team was not to focus on getting medals at the games, but to enjoy themselves and do their best.
“I don’t want them to go and count the medals they bring back. “But, to have a positive outing enjoy the events they take part in and just do their best.”
All preparations had been completed and the team now looks towards the journey which begins today.
Digicel owner and billionaire Dennis O’Brien will also meet the team in Abu Dhabi.
