FARMERS of Drasa, Lautoka have been advised to consider multi-cropping for better soil utilization and improved yields.

This was relayed to the members of the Warabetia and Marasa Herbs and Vegetable Cluster Farmers by Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu during a recent visit to farmers in the Western Division.

“Farmers need to practice multi-cropping which is very important due to the changes in climatic conditions currently being experienced. This will sustain farmers during such conditions,” Mr Seruiratu said.

He emphasised the importance of forming clusters as it would foster partnership between farmers and could further enhance individual farmers’ productivity through the cluster model. This will also allow the Ministry to effectively support them.

“When farmers are grouped together into clusters, it is easier for the Ministry of Agriculture to assist, advise, organize and determine the mode of collection for production in collection centres for the benefit of farmers,” he added.

During the consultative visit, farmers also raised issues and difficulties they faced due to the current dry spell in the Western parts of Fiji.

Mr Seruiratu advised them to use water sparingly.
