Waisale Serevi was a proud dad watching his daughter Asinate Serevi playing her heart out for her country and her Rooster Chicken Fijian Drua women’s team.
Serevi was among the soldout crowd yesterday, witnessing history at Laucala Bay when the Drua played their first Super W home semi-final against the Western Force.
The world renowned rugby sevens legend said his daughter made a lot of sacrifices just to be playing alongside her sisters.
“I’m so proud of her, she worked hard, sacrificed a lot. She’s a medical assistant back in the US, she graduated with Law and Justice but she said she’s going to play rugby,” the former Fiji 7s maestro shared.
Both Serevi and his daughter knew that women’s rugby had little to no support in Fiji but it was something Asinate was willing to help change.
“Twenty-three years ago when we were playing club rugby here only two women’s team were playing at the time and people were laughing at them not knowing that this is the level we would
reach. We’ve always watched these games on television over the years but this year for women’s rugby to get a home semi-final is historic and I want to thank all the coaches involved including Senirusi Seruvakula, Inoke Male and now Mosese Rauluni, he added.
Serevi said the achievements that the nation celebrates with the team is the fruit of their commitment despite the many challenges they face.
