Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) chairman Ajay Bhai Amrit set social media alight and tongues wagging yesterday when he announced the sacking of FBC chief executive officer Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Many were shocked and outraged by revelations Mr Sayed-Khaiyum collected a monthly salary of $32,000 (including bonus) and $25,000 in bonus per annum.

Following revelations that the board was scrutinising the spending of the public service broadcast (PSB) fee or grant from the Government to FBC, Fiji Labour Party leader and former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry called on Government to investigate the former FBC board for failing in their fiduciary duty in not ensuring FBC operated diligently.

Mr Amrit said the total PSB fee paid since Mr Sayed-Khaiyum took over as CEO in 2008 was $93,782,811.45.

“A thorough investigation must be made and appropriate action must be taken against the CEO and the board,” Mr Chaudhry said.

He also confirmed reports that FBC recently purchased a $200,000 car for Mr Sayed-Khaiyum.
