Justice Minister Siromi Turaga is calling on parents to work together in addressing youth related challenges by fostering a positive environment for the younger generation.
Speaking at the Lomaiviti iYaubula Day last weekend, Mr Turaga pleaded with parents to wake up and actively be aware of their roles and responsibilities.
“Why should we be active in our role?” asked Mr Turaga.
“Because of the many societal issues that are facing the country nowadays and their influence on the iTaukei. It is slowly being felt.”
Mr Turaga said issues of teenage pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, illicit drugs, school aged street dwellers and young people involved in criminal activities were alarming.
He said a collective effort should be taken to address these societal issues.
“We should encourage more quality time with our children.
“Make sure to collaborate with teachers, police, church organisations, and various other sectors.”
He said apart from the parents, the community was crucial in playing a part to ensure the safety of children.
“When a child is baptised in the Methodist Church, we vowed before the Lord as a congregation that we would be part of raising the child.”
Mr Turaga ended his message by stating me kakua vakadua ni batabata na loloma which is translated as love should never grow cold.
