The resignation of Mohammed Saneem from his post as Supervisor of Elections has negated the need for an investigation by the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC).
This, according to Prime Minister and COC chair Sitiveni Rabuka.
During a news conference yesterday, Mr Rabuka acknowledged the topic when it was brought up by members of the media. “As far as the COC process is concerned, it negates the need for investigation,” he said.
“However, if there are other complaints that need to be taken up through the normal legal processes, they will be but not by COC.
” Yesterday, Mr Saneem posted an official message on his LinkedIn page, announcing that he had resigned.
“To my professional network, I would like to confirm that I have tendered my resignation as Fiji’s Supervisor of Elections. It’s time for new opportunities,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, Fiji Labour Party (FLP) leader Mahendra Chaudhry said the resignation of the suspended Supervisor of Elections “raised a lot of questions”.
“He should not be allowed to get away by simply resigning. His resignation should not be accepted until all allegations against him, including those of misconduct, are cleared,” he said.
“He should be put through the due process of the law and held answerable to all allegations made against him.”
Mr Chaudhry claimed when Opposition political parties had written to the COC earlier expressing no confidence in him as supervisor because of instances of “misbehaviour”, the COC had ignored the complaints.
