A total of 6823 leases were issued to sugarcane farmers under Agricultural Landlord and Tenant Act (ALTA) between January 1997 and December 31, 2020.
This is stated in the Sugar Industry Tribunal 2020 annual report that was tabled in Parliament on Monday.
It said 2140 new ALTA leases were issued to iTaukei farmers while 4105 new leases were given to Indo-Fijian farmers.
In Lautoka, total iTaukei farmers with ALTA leases were 672, in Ba there were 703 farmers, 573 iTaukei farmers in Labasa had ALTA leases while 232 ALTA leases were in the Penang area under iTaukei farmers.
In the Lautoka area, 1603 Indo-Fijian farmers had ALTA leases, 1448 farmers in Ba, 1464 in Labasa and 128 in Penang.
