GOVERNMENT will always be ready to assist you.

Fiji’s Minister of Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy stressed this during a ‘talanoa’ session with Moala elders in Nadi recently.

Dr Reddy who was conducting a two-day site visit on flood prone villages in the West as part of his ministry scoping works to reduce the risk of flooding in those areas said relocation was the best long term solution but the final decision would come from the villagers themselves.

“We can carry out river bank protection works. This village is similar to a peninsula and since you have land on the higher side, the sustainable thing to do I think is to relocate,” he said.

There are close to 700 Fijians that reside in Moala Village and nearby settlements.

Villages that were visited by Dr Reddy included Yako, Moala, Navatulevu, Narewa, Nakavu in Nadi and Vitogo in Lautoka.
