SWAMI Vivekanda College reigns supreme on the pool after dethroning Marist Brothers High School at the Fiji National Schools Swimming Championship over the weekend.
The Nadi based school ended the Red Fire boys decade long dominance with 26 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals. Marist had to settle for second place while Natabua High School came in third.
SVC also claimed the girls division edging Yat Sen Secondary to be crowned queen of the pool.
A total 44 new records were set during the Fiji National Schools Swimming Championships which was held at the National Aquatic Centre over the weekend.
Total 17 records fell in the boys division for both the primary and secondary schools division while 27 new records were etched in the history books of schools swimming in the girls category for both divisions.
Temafa Yalimaiwai of Marist Brothers High School broke a 26-year-old open record set by Carl Probert.
Yalimaiwai set the record in the 2018 Fiji National Schools’ Swimming Championship last Saturday.
Yalimaiwai broke Carl Probert’s record of 4:26.41 in the freestyle open set in 1992 with new record time of 4:26.20.
He also broke Taichi Vakasama’s record of 4:31.97 which he set in 2016 in the same competition.
Rosemary Rova was the star for Swavi Vivekanadan College who set a record in the female U15 400 metres freestyle at the 2018 Fiji National Schools Swimming Championship at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva.
The Swami Vivekananda College Year 11 student finished the race in the 4 minutes and 51 seconds while the previous record was held by Tiarana Mitchell of Jai Narayan College with a time of five minutes and 23 seconds in 2014.
Deemed the largest schools swimming competition since its inception, the competition saw 844 swimmers from 44 schools around the country in the two days event.
