People’s Alliance Party leader Sitiveni Rabuka congratulated Australian Prime Minister-elect Anthony Albanese on the Labor Party’s victory at the polls in a statement where he also noted how Australian voters responded to calls for change.

“Australia has been an enduring friend of Fiji and it is our wish that this warm relation will continue in the term of the new Australian government,” Mr Rabuka said.

“With Fiji preparing to go the polls, The People’s Alliance has noted how the Australian voters responded to the Australian Labor Party calls for change, and especially its positions on climate change and indigenous rights.”

He said Australia had been a long-term friend of Fiji and was the first to respond to Fiji in times of greatest need.

“We offer Mr Albanese and his Labor government our very best wishes.”

Mr Rabuka also sent out a letter to Albanese’s predecessor, Scott Morrison.

“Please accept the congratulations of The People’s Alliance party of Fiji on the successful conduct of democratic elections; your gracious acceptance of the result, and your role in the orderly and peaceful transfer of power,” Mr Rabuka said in his note to Mr Morrison.
