FORMER Hibiscus queens from as far back as 1956 will return to the spotlight this month as the festival celebrates seven decades of history at Albert Park, Suva.
Festival organisers have confirmed that queens from different eras of the festival will make special appearances, bringing together a legacy that began with the inaugural event in 1956.
Director Ellen Whippy-Knight said the reunion was part of efforts to revive the glamour and significance of the festival while celebrating the women who had carried its legacy over the years.
“I am now absolutely delighted to confirm we will have personal appearances from these former queens,” she said.
The former queens expected to attend include the first Hibiscus Queen, Liebling Hoeflich from 1956, along with winners from different decades including Eta Ulavula, Michele Smith, Annie Reymond, Lenora Qereqeretabua, Lynda Tabuya, Patricia Naisara, Merewalesi Nailatikau, Alisi Rabukawaqa, Melania Tora and outgoing queen Rhyelle Aisea.
Ms Whippy-Knight said the highlight would be the appearance of the top three contestants from the first Hibiscus Queen pageant, including winner Liebling Hoeflich and runners-up Susan Curtis and Lydia Pickering.
She said former queens would also play a role as mentors and role models for current contestants, sharing their experiences and stories.
“It’s wonderful that contestants can see real role models who have won the crown.”
The 70th FMF Hibiscus Festival will be held at Albert Park from August 29 to September 5.
