STUDENTS in Vunikaloa, Macuata, continue to miss school during periods of heavy rain due to poor road conditions.
A resident Matelita Mocevakaca said the deteriorating state of the road made it unsafe for children to travel, particularly during wet weather.
“The issue had been raised at provincial council meetings and with relevant authorities, but little action had been taken,” she said.
Speaking to this newspaper, Ms Mocevakaca said parents were often left with no choice but to keep their children at home to avoid potential accidents.
“Our requests have been falling on deaf ears.”
As a result, she said, students experienced frequent absenteeism, which over time affected their academic performance.
She said the community continued to call for urgent repairs and proper maintenance of the road.
Attempts to get comments from acting Commissioner Northern Apolosi Lewaqai remained futile when this edition went to print.
