The public notice by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services that it no longer accepted payments made with cash or cheques will be withdrawn as there were no consultations done, says Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Mr Rabuka was responding to queries yesterday on concerns raised by the public about the ministry moving to a “cashless” system.

Last week, the ministry advised members of the public that from Monday, June 3, they would no longer accept payments made with cash or cheques.

The ministry stated that EFTPOS, M-Paisa and MyCash were the only acceptable methods of payment at all Ministry of Health revenue collecting offices/stations.

“No there was none (no consultations) and it will be withdrawn,” Mr Rabuka said.

“There is no authority for any ministry to stop cash payment or cheque payment.”

Mr Rabuka said the notice, which was advertised by the ministry, was not authorised by Cabinet.

“We are withdrawing those instructions that have gone out until Cabinet decides in consultation with the banks.”
