The Maharaj brothers, Adheesh and Ashrit, hail from Labasa, Fiji, where they grew up in a close-knit family that deeply values education, integrity, and service.
Their parents, Anesh Maharaj and Shobhna Maharaj, instilled in them the importance of hard work and community commitment, shaping their paths in very different but equally impactful professions.
Adheesh Maharaj’s journey began at Labasa Sangam Primary School in 1999 and continued at Labasa Sangam SKM College.
Driven by a passion for helping and healing others, he pursued six years of medical studies at the University of Fiji (UPSM Unifiji), completing his MBBS in 2017.
For Adheesh, becoming a medical practitioner was not just a career choice but a calling.
“What better opportunity to heal than being a doctor?
Saving lives every day and receiving blessings from patients is the most rewarding experience,” he said.
His future plans included subspecialising in medicine and enhancing healthcare accessibility for maritime communities through teleconferencing and decentralisation.
Meanwhile, Ashrit Maharaj’s academic path led him through Labasa Sangam Primary and College before he moved to Suva to study at the University of the South Pacific’s Laucala campus.
Graduating with a Bachelor of Laws in 2022 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice in 2023, Ashrit became Fiji’s first-generation lawyer in his family.
Today, he works as Legal Counsel at RB Patel Group Ltd, handling corporate law, compliance, litigation, and property negotiations.
Despite the challenges of studying during the COVID-19 lockdown — when all courses switched online — Ashrit maintained focus by creating routines for exercise and self-care at home.
He reflected, “I had no handouts, so I learned by reading extensively and seeking answers on my own.”
Both brothers share a love for soccer, while their other interests differ — Adheesh enjoys music and travelling, while Ashrit is passionate about reading legal developments, socialising, and driving.
Their supportive upbringing encouraged them to balance their personal lives with demanding careers, often juggling studies and work simultaneously.
Their experiences shaped important lessons they want to share.
Adheesh advises: “It’s never too early to begin. You won’t achieve anything if you don’t fall and fail countless times first. Stay focused on your goals, and good things will follow.”
Ashrit’s message to aspiring professionals is grounded in patience and resilience: “Success is rarely instant. It comes through small consistent steps and learning from setbacks.
Stay true to your principles because integrity and hard work will carry you further than shortcuts ever will.
Surround yourself with people who uplift you, seek mentors who inspire you, and view every challenge as an opportunity to grow.”
Looking ahead, Ashrit remains committed to furthering his education with plans to pursue a master’s in law.
His vision extends beyond his legal practice to include contributions to governance, corporate responsibility, and youth development in Fiji, while also dedicating time to family.
The Maharaj brothers’ stories highlight the power of determination, education, and family support in achieving success.
United by shared values but pursuing distinct paths, Adheesh and Ashrit exemplify the impact of hard work and the importance of giving back to their community.
Their journeys inspire others to embrace challenges, nurture curiosity, and remain committed to making meaningful differences in their fields and beyond.
