EVEN though overcrowding continues to be a problem at the Labasa prison, the Fiji Corrections Service says it is being managed well.
Responding to concerns raised by former inmates who did not wish to be named for fear of victimisation, a statement from Assistant Commissioner Operations Senior Superintendent Salote Panapasa said concerns raised by the former inmates were being addressed.
“The best advice given to these former prisoners is not to re-offend,” said SSP Panapasa.
“We encourage them to live a law-abiding life so that we can collectively reduce the overcrowding at the Labasa Corrections Centre and our prisons.
“The Fiji Corrections Service is managing well the overcrowding concerns raised by these former prisoners.
“All prisoners under our care are fed three meals per day as prescribed under the Corrections Act.”
A group of inmates had complained that the state of cells at Vaturekuka was almost inhumane, concerns expressed about the food supply and number of inmates sharing a room.
