Being patient with possession is one of the key areas that Fiji Airways men’s 7s coach Osea Kolinisau is instilling in his players.

This was something he saw they lacked in Hong Kong which blew their chances of winning matches against Australia and New Zealand.

Preparation for the next leg in Singapore resumed last week and Kolinisau has been drilling his men, hoping to see some of these areas executed and practised during training.

They’ve also had scrimmage sessions with Japan 7s which ended yesterday, putting their training to the test.

“Something we are working on is keeping the ball longer,” he said.

“I’m trying to tell the boys that the longer we keep the ball, the opposition gets tired from defence and we don’t have to rush to score a try. When we are in their 22, we can aff ord to be patient, create one more ruck and score on the outside.”

Kolinisau said playing sevens was a team effort and all the players needed to be sync when on the field.

“We win as a team, and we lose as a team. We didn’t capitalise on our opportunities as a team and it’s good to see the boys starting to understand how I want them to play the game.

“You want to play the Fijian style and that’s when you’re in attack, you want to make the ground as wide as possible and in defence, you want to make it as small as possible,” Kolinisau added.

The Singapore 7s will be held from May 3-5.
