Newly elected Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu made two promises in the House yesterday.

He said the Opposition would work with the Government for the benefit of every Fijian and he also told the Coalition partners that every move they made would be closely scrutinised.

Mr Seruiratu was elected as Leader of Opposition after being nominated by fellow member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj.

“I am here to serve all Fijians and of course being the government in waiting, we are here to ensure that we work with the government, at the same time keep them in check as well,” he said.

“And of course, I hope that we will work according to the expectations of our people and most importantly, bring prosperity and unity in the Fiji that we aspire to.”

Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, while congratulating Mr Seruiratu on the appointment, said that he would be awarded all the privileges that an Opposition Leader was entitled to, unlike what was done to Leaders of the Opposition in the past.

“You will be accorded whatever should be accorded rightly to that high office, Honorable Leader of the Opposition,” he said.

“We will try to ensure that all privileges are provided, there shall be no hinderance or check and balances being imposed unilaterally on that high office of yours from this office, as we had experienced in the past.

“That, I would like to confirm from this office.”

Mr Seruiratu replaced former Prime Minister and FijiFirst party leader Voreqe Bainimarama who resigned from Parliament in March after being slapped with a three-year suspension for statements made against President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
