THE Online Safety Commission has issued a warning to all Fijians to refrain from spreading hateful words and discrimination on social media over the barbaric attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, last Friday.

Commissioner Anne Dunn Baleilevuka said they were aware that hateful and racial words were spreading across social media platforms.

“We have not received any complaints from the public after the barbaric attack in Christchurch last Friday, but when a complaint is made to the commission we act on the full authority of the law to appropriately deal with the matter,” she said.

Mrs Baleilevuka said their role was to promote online safety and receive complaints regarding electronic communication that could cause harm.

The primary role of the commission is to promote online safety and receive complaints regarding electronic communication that may cause harm.

“In doing so, we monitor electronic communication that has been reported or complained about to the commission.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those who lost their loved ones by this horrific and senseless act of violence.

“We urge online users to use their online platforms for spreading words of encouragement, peace and love at such a time as this for our neighbouring country.”
