NEW Zealand has launched a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate if its authorities could have done more to prevent this year’s Christchurch terror attack.

This was part of the message delivered to 200 Fijian Muslims at the commemoration of Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday by New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji Jonathan Curr at Tavua’s Garvey Park yesterday.

“A Royal Commission of Inquiry, the highest form of inquiry in New Zealand, has been launched to investigate whether the New Zealand authorities could have done more to prevent such an attack,” Mr Curr said.

“How we can strengthen ourselves so that such a horrifying tragedy is never repeated and how we can better promote acceptance and inclusion of our Muslim communities in New Zealand.

“And in the meantime, we remember and support our families who have lost their families among them three Fijians and those who suffered and still suffer trauma from this attack.”

He said New Zealanders had drawn strength from the leadership demonstrated by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who with compassion, sincerity and action, centred on values as a nation, unified all New Zealanders behind her government in support of their Muslim community.
