DESPITE growing participation numbers, the Nasinu Netball Association continues to face financial difficulties ahead of its new season.
Association secretary Marica Leweniqila said funding remains one of the biggest challenges for the competition, especially after the loss of major sponsorship support in recent years.
“For the past few years, the tournament used to be known as Fiji Gold Nasinu Netball Tournament because we had sponsorship from Paradise Beverages,” Leweniqila said.
“But the past few years, Paradise Beverages have not come in again due to changing management procedures and decisions.”
While sponsorship challenges remain, Leweniqila said the association has continued to survive through the generosity of former players and supporters living overseas and around Fiji.
“We thank God for always intervening in our association, especially sending in people that have played for Nasinu and represented Fiji,” she said.
“Some are overseas and some are living outside of Suva, but they continue sending donations and contributions for Nasinu Netball.”
The association’s grassroots foundation has also helped maintain interest in the sport.
Leweniqila said most affiliated clubs are community or church-based teams, including Covenant Sisters and Nadera Netball team while established institutions such as USP and Alumni netball teams have also shown interest in joining the competition.
The association has also seen steady growth in men’s netball, with six teams competing in the knockout tournament and another five expected to join next week.
Junior development continues to be another major focus, with age-grade competitions ranging from Genesis (ages six to nine), Roses (ages 10 -12), Rubies (13-14) and Bulileka (16-17).
Leweniqila thanked coaches, managers and supporters for their continued commitment to Nasinu Netball and expressed confidence in another successful season.
