A police officer from Lami Police Station has called for public assistance after reports surfaced of police vehicles allegedly being used for illicit drug trafficking.

Speaking at the Lami Women’s Forum at Yatu Lau Hotel yesterday, crime prevention officer, Police Constable Tevita Qounadovu Nawatu, said members of the public should report officers suspected of abusing Government vehicles and resources for illegal activities.

“We have received a report that a police officer was seen using a police vehicle to sell illicit drugs,” he said.

“We need more reports on this issue because there isn’t only one police officer that drives the police vehicle, there are several officers.”

Mr Nawatu also called for accountability within the force.

“I also seek a public apology, because the very people that are supposed to uphold the law are abusing their powers and using Government vehicles and assets for illicit drug activities.”

“Those found to be involved will face the brunt of the law and will have to change their uniform from blue to orange.”

Meanwhile, another officer from the Lami Police Station raised concerns over increasing domestic violence cases and youth loitering in the business area.

Sergeant Eseta Pareti said many domestic violence cases reported to police involved women refusing to proceed with complaints against their husbands after officers arrived.

“Domestic violence cases can lead to death – our life is paramount,” she said.

She also raised concerns about children loitering on the streets at night, saying many youths hid when police patrols approached before returning after officers left the area.

“The responsibility to teach our children should be done from home, it is not the police’s duty to teach your children.”
