Fiji does not have a specific legal framework that is dedicated to the regulation of residential tenancy.

President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere noted this during his official address at the opening of the 23rd Attorney-General’s Conference at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa at Natadola yesterday.

He told about 350 lawyers that it would be important to discuss core issues, such as the legal right of both a landlord and a tenant, to develop that framework.

“Furthermore, we are a unique country. Ninety-five per cent of land in Fiji can only be leased,” the President said.

“We will need to find ways to address tenancy issues at the grassroots level and put in place a reliable and transparent process to resolve disputes fairly and correct injustices.

“The views and experiences you share at this conference will make a great contribution to building a solid legal framework.”

Ratu Wiliame also reminded lawyers that they must be zealous advocates for their clients.

He also said the rule of law must protect the weak, vulnerable and disadvantaged.

“The rule of law must hold the power to account and ensure fairness.

“And, importantly, if we respect the principles of the rule of law, we can change those laws that no longer serve us or that no longer seem just.”

The two-day conference ends today.
