Former supervisor of elections Mohammed Saneem was stopped from leaving the country yesterday and Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua confirmed it was because a stop departure order was issued.
He said the travel restriction was not issued by his office or police, adding that agencies such as the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service can “put out a person of interest”.
Yesterday morning, a statement from the Fijian Elections Office stated a complaint against Mr Saneem was lodged with FICAC as he allegedly authorised the payment of allowances to Electoral Commission members for attending events other than meetings.
Late yesterday, FICAC said it could confirm “an investigation and a stop departure”.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has alluded that Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum may have his “movement out of Fiji” restricted if he was subjected to any prosecutorial processes.
He made the comments in an interview with New Zealand-based Tagata Pasifika this week.
The Fiji Times was not successful in getting the PM’s Office to clarify this statement.
