THE National Federation Party has set out some priority areas it will focus on should it form Government after this year’s general election.
NFP leader Professor Biman Prasad reiterated that a matter of priority to them would be reducing the cost of living by making 15 basic food and other items VAT- free and reducing duties on some of them.
While speaking at the party’s working committee meeting in Suva on Saturday, Prof Prasad said the introduction of a living wage of $5 an hour for unskilled and skilled workers would also be one of their priorities.
“Colleagues and friends, there is a lot of cleaning up to do when we get back into Parliament as an NFP government,” Prof Prasad said.
“We need to, as a matter of priority, restore tenure of employment in the civil service, do away with the contractual employment and increase retirement age to 60 years,” he said.
“Implement a minimum guaranteed price of $100 per tonne of sugarcane beginning from 2018 and start work to build a new sugar mill in Penang, Rakiraki.
“We will review the fines, fees and charges to bring down the cost of doing business and reduce the excise duty on beer so that its price becomes affordable.”
