A NEW quarry at Nukubalavu in Bua is expected to boost roadworks on Vanua Levu which serves more than 3000 people.Located seven kilometres from Nabouwalu at Nukubalavu in Bua, the quarry is leased by Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) from the mataqali Valelevu in Bua.

A statement from FHH said the new quarry began operations in February after supporting road building materials arrived.

“It will be providing us with a good source of material and binders as well, and it is very good for unsealed roads here in the Northern Division,” said quarry supervisor Isimeli Tuiloma.

Mr Tuiloma says after extensive testing at the site, the material sourced from the new quarry conforms to Fiji Roads Authority standards, paving the way for work to start.

Not only does using the hard rock sourced from the quarry provide a better quality of material than that sourced from rivers, there is also a reduction in the negative environmental impacts on river ecosystems and
water quality for people living downstream.

Fiji Roads Authority’s major access routes that will benefit from materials sourced from the new quarry include the main Nabouwalu road, the Nasolo junction and other roads in places such as Solevu and Kubulau.

Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) is contracted by the Fiji Roads Authority to carry out road maintenance work in the Central, Eastern and Northern divisions.
