THE Nadroga Rugby Union could soon revive an old tradition of Fijian rugby if a new plan is successful.

To improve the standard of club competition in the Nadroga-Navosa Province, the union is expected to include a new member called Service Rugby Club.

It comprise of members of the Fiji Police Force (FPF), Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the National Fire Authority (NFA).

If plans go well, then the new affiliate will breathe life to the return of once a champion club across the border called Service Rugby Club.

“It is made of servicemen and women who are working around Sigatoka, also some government workers,” NRU games co-ordinator Talica Dakia said.

“It is an exciting proposal because it will help improve the standard of club competition in our province. These are visitors to our province and they bring with them wealth of talents, skills and knowledge that could help us in rugby and in personal lives.

“It is under discussion, but we are very, very happy with the proposed concept,” Dakia said during the Nadroga 10s at Lawaqa Park last fortnight.

The tournament opened the NRU coming rugby season.

“Our 10s competition is usually the season opener for Nadroga. Most of the unions are using this as a good concept to kick off their season, especially bridging the 15s and 7s.

“There is a need to accommodate a rugby 10s season in our provincial calendar. It is because of the interest in the number of players playing 10s code.

“I believe there should be some accommodation to have the rugby 10s concept in Fiji, not only as a season opener, but actually to have an annual tournament.”
