A TOTAL of 1000 calls were received between March 2017 and June this year on the Domestic Violence National Helpline of which 600 calls (60 per cent) involved domestic violence.
This was revealed by Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre coordinator Shamima Ali at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Women in Suva today.
Ms Ali said so far this year, 600 cases of domestic violence were recorded from January to mid-August by the centre.
She said this was the first funding they were receiving from the Government to work on the elimination of violence against women.
She added they received six to 10 calls a day on their 1560 toll free helpline.
Ms Ali said most of the calls received were genuine calls, noting the rare occurrences of prank calls.
And she said most of those calls were from received from the Central and Western divisions.
Ministry of Women permanent secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta said this was a working partnership between the ministry and the centre to break the silence on violence against women and children.
