THE Namara rubbish dump has reached capacity, prompting the council to consider alternative sites to serve Labasa and the wider Northern Division.
Labasa Town Council special administrator Samuela Ligairi said plans were in progress to identify a new site, with support expected through World Bank funding.
Mr Ligairi said the council was working with the Whole of Life Tourism Development Project, the Ministry of Environment and other stakeholders to identify a suitable location.
“The dump site has reached its capacity, and there are plans, especially with the World Bank funding that has come in, to find an alternative location to move our dump site,” he said.
He said the current land was believed to be leased to the Labasa Town Council, although the lease was nearing expiry.
“Several possible locations had been identified for further investigation. For a central rubbish dump to serve the Northern Division, sites in Seaqaqa were being considered.”
However, he said no final decision had been made.
“The final decision will be made after our investigations and findings, and advice from other stakeholders related to the environment.”
He said the dump could be relocated as early as next year.
Meanwhile, the council is trying to extinguish a fire that broke out at the dump site last Thursday.
