THE High Court in Suva has granted a Fiji National University (FNU) medical student leave to apply for judicial review of his suspension.

In a judgment delivered on November 4, Justice Vishwa Datt Sharma granted Shivaan Kumar Sharma limited leave to challenge the university’s July 6 decision to suspend him.

Mr Sharma, a final-year MBBS student, represented by lawyer Jagath Karunaratne, seeks to complete his remaining clinical placements before graduating.

FNU opposed the application, citing professional fitness and public safety, institutional liability, failure to exhaust internal remedies and the absence of an arguable case.

The court noted that Mr Sharma’s internship had been halted despite him having substantially completed his academic requirements.

The case was adjourned to March 15, 2027.
