Fijian military Colonel Penioni Naliva has been removed from his position as Deputy Commander of the Australian Army’s 7th Brigade due to allegations of human rights abuse against him.

This was confirmed by the Republic of Fiji Military Force Commander, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai last week.

Mr Kalouniwai also confirmed, Colonel Naliva is currently with the Research Division of the Australian Defence Force.

Colonel Naliva was officially announced as Deputy Commander of the Australian Army’s 7th Brigade on January 25.

Soon after the appointment, human rights activists in Fiji highlighted alleged human rights violations against him, dating back to 2006.

The Australian Defence Force had said in February they were aware of the allegations against Colonel Naliva.
