Nadroga Rugby Union has welcomed the appointment of one of their sons as the maiden skipper of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Super Rugby team.
Former Nadroga hitman and former Fiji 7s captain Nemani Nagusa was last week named for the top honour and would be remembered as the first Fijian Drua captain in Super Rugby.
Union secretary Manoa Veremalua said it was a joyous occasion for the people of Nadroga.
“We’re so proud of Nemani,” Mr Veremalua said.
“We believe it is an honour for him to be selected as the captain of the team. Nemani possesses all the qualities and values needed for a captain.
“He was the most logical choice because Nemani has the character to lead the team and commands respect of all his teammates.
“Nadroga Rugby Union is delighted with the appointment of Nemani to be given the responsibility of leading the team throughout the campaign.
“We hope and pray that Nemani helps the team to achieve great things in the tournament.
“We wish Nemani and the Fijian Drua all the very best.”
Nagusa made his debut for the Flying Fijians in 2012 against Georgia.
He has played 18 Tests for Fiji.
He was announced as Drua No.4 in the first wave of signing last year and featured for Newcastle Falcons team in the English Premiership.
The 34-year-old’s appointment was announced by Fijian Drua chief executive officer Brian Thorburn and coach Mick Byrne last week.
Meanwhile, the Fijian Drua would play Australia’s New South Wales Waratahs in their first outing on Friday, February 18 at CommBank Stadium in Sydney.
