SOME people seem to think that Kings Rd is a busy highway but right now it’s a road under construction and people must get used to that idea and treat it with respect, says Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) CEO Jonathan Moore.

Mr Moore said the safety of road users was a concern and FRA workers needed to work in a safe working environment during the construction of the four-lane road between Nakasi and the Rewa Bridge.

“Some motorists are posing threats to our workers who are working tirelessly on constructing the four-lane road between Nakasi and the Rewa Bridge.

“Road construction or maintenance have signs in advance to warn motorists that road work is being carried out.

“Active work zones are designated as such to notify motorists when they enter and leave the work zone.

“We have some arrogant drivers who still treat the active construction site as a highway. Neither I nor my workers expect to work under those conditions.

“The day is good enough but night time is really terrible. And I’m always concerned about the safety of my men on the road.”

He said the safety of his workers was paramount and they were calling on drivers to treat the construction site with respect and allow the workers to conduct their work in a safe environment to avoid any accident.

Mr Moore said FRA had even put up lights at night but it was never the same as daylight and they did see some incidences of reckless driving during the night.

He added the work on the 3.8 kilometres upgrade project was anticipated to be completed by June, weather permitted.
