THE management and control of vehicle numbers on Fiji’s road is not the responsibility of the Fiji Roads Authority, says CEO Jonathan Moore.

He made the statement during a presentation at the Fiji Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business 2025 forum at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva.

He said people should be able to acquire personal transportation vehicles as they wished.

Mr Moore said to account for the increase in road use, the FRA had plans to increase capacity wherever possible.

He said this included adding road lanes, providing more facilities for faster vehicles to pass slower vehicles on major highways, providing efficient traffic flow through urban areas and supporting the growth of public transport by providing dedicated bus lanes with “park and ride” access.

However, Mr Moore also said network resilience was a major consideration in the support of an effective economy.

“To provide an acceptable level of resilience the Fiji Roads Authority has developed plans to deliver works based on providing alternative routes throughout the country, ensure that no more single lane bridges are constructed, ensure that every river has an alternative crossing and provide by passroutes around major urban centres.”

He said the network considerations were part of a long-term plan.

“They will be costly but they are necessary for a successful economy.”
