The shortage of medicinal drugs is not peculiar to Fiji, said Minister for Health Ifereimi Waqainabete in Parliament on Monday.

He made the comment while answering a question on drug shortage for chronic diseases in Fiji.

“As we speak, majority of the medicine that were in short supply and in chronic shortages worldwide are now in stock,” he said.

“Last week, eight containers had arrived into the country bringing much needed stock, so they are in stock, majority of them as we speak.” Dr Waqainabete said there was a global shortage of medicinal drugs.

“Most of these pharmaceutical companies have reneged on that and they wanted us to break it because they obviously want to increase their prices,” Dr Waqainabete said.
