After an impressive outing at the Aquatics World Championships, Fiji swimmer Hansel McCaig believes he is on track with preparations for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics later this year.

The 21-year-old competed in the 100- and 50-metre Men’s Freestyle event over the weekend alongside teammate Kelera Mudunasoko.

“The competition was the indicator of whether my preparations for the Paris Games are on track.

“And looking at the way I performed at the championship, I can say that I am on track with my training as I try to qualify for the Olympics,” the Savusavu lad said.

The former Natabua High School student said competing against some of the best swimmers in the world had been an eye-opening experience for him.

“I’ve learned a lot just from watching and competing with these swimmers, and I know what I must do to better my performance.

“I have noted my flaws and weaknesses, so I will be working on these for the next few months.”

He is now preparing for the Australian Open Nationals which will be held in April.

McCaig won Team Fiji’s first gold medal at the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands after coming in first place in the men’s 50m event and is currently the top-ranked swimmer in the country.

In the men’s 50-metre event, swimmers will need to clock a time of 22.07 seconds to qualify for Olympic B qualifying times.

McCaig clocked 23.30s in the event last weekend and is less than two seconds from qualifying.
