DESPITE their busy schedules, vendors at the Labasa Market took time off from their stalls to clean the Labasa riverbank yesterday morning.
Labasa Market Vendors Association president Salanieta Bola said the clean-up was conducted after vendors noticed increased littering in the area, especially by the riverbank.
“A lot of rubbish collected was from the riverbank and it’s sad because we are trying to protect our rivers and oceans from rubbish,” she said
“We also noticed that fish guts and a lot of rubbish were in the vicinity of the fish market which usually caused stench in the area. “So we are urging all vendors and the public to use the rubbish bins provided.”
Mrs Bola said they also noticed the need to have more rubbish bins in the fish market area.
“Even at the taxi stand area, lolly-wrappers, empty grog bags and dried grog were collected from areas where people drink grog.
“So we also believe that littering officers need to be out there to carry out their duties.
“After all, we are climate change champions and we need to support Government in keeping Fiji clean.”
Market vendors picked up rubbish before starting their daily chores.
