MACUATA rugby women’s team held its nerve to secure a 22-19 victory over Naitasiri women’s team in a closely fought round six match of the Subrails Marama Cup Championship at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori.
Macuata led 10-7 at halftime before holding on for the three-point win.
Head coach Motu Lalagavesi was pleased with the team’s performance, particularly after the challenges the side has faced during its month-long stay in Viti Levu.
“I am so pleased with the girls’ performance,” Lalagavesi said.
She said the team had shown determination to overcome the difficulties it had faced away from home.
Macuata has spent the past month in Viti Levu and is scheduled to return to Vanua Levu next week, where it will host its remaining home matches.
Lalagavesi said the team was looking forward to returning home and playing in front of its supporters.
“We are happy that the games are going to Vanua Levu. We are looking forward to hosting our home games,” she said.
The coach said the team would now focus on making the most of its home fixtures.
“Our focus now is to win the rest of our home games in Vanua Levu,” she said.
Despite the victory, Lalagavesi identified the scrum as an area that needed attention before the team’s next match.
“We need to work on our scrums for the next game, but everything seems perfect,” she said.
Macuata’s win provides another boost as the side prepares to return home after a demanding month in Viti Levu.
Lalagavesi said the players had continued to work hard despite limited support and training facilities.
She also thanked those who had supported the team throughout its campaign.
The coach said she was happy with the results so far and believed the team could continue building on its performances when it returns to Vanua Levu.
