THE Land Transport Authority has issued a stern warning to drivers engaged in illegal car races.

The warning  follows the emergence on social media platforms of videos showing vehicles  seemingly allegedly racing on public roads.

LTA acting chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa said illegal car racing on public roads was a blatant disregard for the law and a serious threat to public safety.

“The authority urges those involved in such activities to immediately cease their reckless driving behaviour,” says Mr Rokosawa.

“This activity is not only illegal but also completely unacceptable.”

Mr Rokosawa emphasised the responsibility of every driver to adhere to traffic laws and regulations, highlighting that engaging in illegal racing jeopardizes the safety of everyone on the road.

The LTA’s enforcement team is cracking down on this activity through combined operations with police, especially along Queen Elizabeth Dr in Nasese and other hotspot areas where these activities have been reported.

The Fiji Motorsports Association is also aware of the issue and is pleading for those involved to refrain from engaging in it.

“Our request to those drivers is to be patient, as the association is exploring options to provide a racetrack so that these activities can be carried out in a safe space,” Mr Haniff said.

LTA is urging members of the public to assist with law enforcement in identifying and reporting individuals engaged in illegal car racing activities.

Issues pertaining to the illegal activity can be reported through the LTA’s free texting platform — 582.
