THE local dairy industry does not have the potential to produce 10 million litres of milk per annum from the 6000 cows the country has with its suppliers.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Agriculture, Dr Mahendra Reddy, while responding to an oral question from Employment Assistant Minister Alvick Maharaj yesterday.

He said about 64.5 million litres of milk was needed annually to meet the local demand for dairy products.

Dr Reddy said the total liquid milk demand was about 24 million litres of which only six million litres was produced locally.

He said the milking cow number stood at about 6000 heads, which were capable of producing around 10 litres per day.

“The meaning of intensification is to have more milk and meat out of the existing herd and grazing area,” he said.
