PROMINENT Suva lawyer Richard Naidu called on lawyers attending the Fiji Law Society’s 2018 Conference to demand better and more efficient processes from Government.

He made the comment while speaking during a panel discussion on the future of the legal profession at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa in Natadola yesterday.

Mr Naidu, a partner at Suva law firm, Munro Leys, said Fiji’s position on the World Bank ease of doing business ranking was an indicator of how inefficient Government services were.

“We are having to cope increasingly, as we are more exposed to globalisation, with first world demands, but we are working in third world legal infrastructure,” he said.

“Technology might make us more efficient but the last mile is always things like the registries that we work in, the regulators that we work to and the court system we work in.

“How are we supposed to respond quickly if we have to tell the client that it’s all paper searches in the Companies Office and the file is missing or, nowadays, the file is with the scanning team at the Department of Justice.”
