WATER tests carried out in Savusavu harbour area since January last year had confirmed the presence of human fecal coliform, however, the latest test in June this year has ruled out the presence of the same.

The tests, carried out by Nawi Island Resort on a weekly basis as part of the EIA (environment impact assessment) requirement, as constructions are in progress, included 10 testing sites around the bay from the marina villas site (near police station) to the wharf area.

Though the latest test in June this year had ruled out the presence of human fecal coliform, other tests conducted previously had proved the presence of the bacteria in Savusavu Bay.

The tests had been conducted at the University of the South Pacific, Institute of Applied Sciences analytical laboratory over the past years.

The resort, in a statement said: “We ensure that tests are done regularly as this is outlined in our EIA where we closely monitor the waters around Nawi Island to see whether the development is impacting the waters and surrounding marine ecosystem.”

“We have taken measures to ensure that our development is controlled. One such measure is the silt fence we have installed.

“Another is the water sampling we do and we have roped in international consultants as well.

“Another feature the new Nawi Island marina will have to ensure our environment is maintained is that we will have a pump-off facility where all discharge or human waste from yachts that berth at the marina can pump off their waste and have it treated at the boutique marina.”
