LABASA head coach Alvin Chand says his side must remain focused and continue improving despite making a positive start to its Extra Premier Leagus campaign.
Speaking after his team’s latest victory, Chand said the result was a timely confidence booster following the disappointment of missing out on the Fiji FACT title, adding that the players are determined to build momentum, in the league.
“The performance so far in the EPL is good,” Chand said.
“Getting a win against Nadroga is a good start after the Fiji FACT campaign, and we are on the right track as far as the league is concerned.”
Chand admitted the Fiji FACT semi-final defeat had affected the squad, with several players struggling to come to terms with missing out on the title on home soil. He believes the latest victory has helped restore confidence within the team.
“This win was very important for us. We could not win the tournament and bowed out in the semi-finals.”
“So, this victory was important to uplift the morale of our boys. Hopefully, it will improve now after we got the win.”
While pleased his team’s progress, Chand said there was no room for complacency, insisting there are still aspects of the game that need attention before the next round of fixtures.
“There are very minor things that we will work on. Our communication and coordination can improve, and that will come through a lot of combination play during training. Apart from that, I think the boys have done very well in a lot of areas.”
Chand also praised the players for responding well to tactical adjustments and maintaining their composure under pressure.
“Our message was not to panic. We were creating a lot of scoring opportunities, but the goals were not coming. We told the players to stay patient, make good decisions of goal and trust the system. The changes in our style of play gave us rewards.”
As Labasa prepares for the next phase of the competition, Chand is confident his players can continue building on their performances, provided they maintain the same work ethic and commitment shown in recent weeks.
He also thanked the club’s management, coaching staff, fitness trainer, players and their families for their continued support throughout the season.
Labasa travels to play Nadi in the Extra Premier League competition this Sunday.
The match kicks off at 3pm at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park.
