‘Increase in the import of vaccine’

THERE has been an increase in the import of measles vaccine after the outbreak in the Serua/Namosi province five days ago.

This was confirmed by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services head of health protection, Dr Aalisha Sahukhan.

She said the last measles outbreak was in 2006 and it was not normal for people to have measles in Fiji.

“At this stage for the outbreak in Serua, Namosi, we have more than enough vaccine,” Dr Sahukhan said.

“As you know we vaccinate children from the age of 12 months, two doses of vaccine, right now it’s 12 months to 18 months.

“Right now we have enough on hand to vaccinate those groups.

“But also an extra vaccine being brought in because we know we have outbreaks in the region.

“Right now the vaccination is for everybody that live in Serua/Namosi from the age of six months onward.

“We are going to the community to vaccinate a lot of people as we can,” she added.
