Fiji Airports took immediate action to ensure minimum inconvenience to passengers when rainwater seeped through a portion of the departure lounge area during a torrential downpour over the weekend.

Chief executive Rowan Chalmers said this in response to questions about a video of the deluge circulating on social media.

“Rainwater seeped through the external wall into the terminal building and this breach was identified by our engineers,” Mr Chalmers said.

“The timely response from our terminal staff to cordon off the area and repair the problem prevented further inconvenience to our passengers at the departure lounge area.

“We would like to thank our ground staff and stakeholders for their quick actions on Saturday in controlling the situation as well as keeping passengers safe during the torrential rain.”

He said they were also prepared for future downpours and unforeseen adverse weather.

Mr Chalmers also indicated that Fiji Airports’ building and works engineers had identified the problem and had been working since Saturday to prevent such an incident happening again.

“We would like to reassure our passengers and visitors that all the repair works have been done accordingly.”
