Yasawa Islands are poised to host a historical event as fans will have the opportunity to witness a Skipper Cup competition for the first time, with Namosi team and Yasawa set to face off in round nine at the Nacula grounds tomorrow.

Both teams are vying for a 7th and 8th spot at the end of the round robin matches.

Fiji Rugby Union tournament director  Jikoibau Matawalu expressed his excitement for the event, stating that it will be a significant moment for the Yasawa Islands.

“This will be a memorable moment for the Yasawa Islands in Nacula, as they will get to witness a Skipper competition, which also adds to the list of new Islands based venues used for the first time for the competition since inception,” said Matawalu.

He adds the game will be played at a venue that has been prepared to meet OHS compliant standards, with World Rugby FOP dimensions and run-offs.

Matawalu also highlighted the unique atmosphere that the historical hosting in Nacula will bring to the game, with traditional protocols expected to be observed by the hosts.

“The event will provide an opportunity for Yasawa Island fans to witness top-level rugby in their own backyard, creating a vibrant atmosphere for the games.”

As the competition enters round nine, Suva remains the only unbeaten team in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The defending champions are poised for a successful title defence, barring any upsets in the remaining matches.

In other matches, Bua will host Vatukoula in Labasa, with a chance to secure a spot in the final. The match between Malolo and Ovalau promises to be an exciting battle, as both teams have experience at the Skipper Cup level.

In Ranadi, Kadavu is the favourite to win the competition, but they will face a tough challenge against Macuata.

A win in this match will set Kadavu up for a final showdown against Vatukoula and Cakaudrove.
