HYDROCHLOROFLUOROCARBONS (HCFCs) chemicals contribute the most to the depletion of our ozone layer, says Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment Joshua Wycliffe.

“There are many reasons why the ozone layer gets depleted and one of the many reasons is the chemicals that are used normally,” Mr Wycliffe said.

He said HCFCs were mostly found in refrigeration and air conditioning units.

“There is much to be done and the only way to achieve this is through achievement and collaboration with various agencies both within Fiji and international.”

He said the ministry worked in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme in raising awareness about the harmful effects of those chemicals, as well as other industries.

Mr Wycliffe launched World Ozone Day at the Holiday Inn in Suva, and it was attended by more than 100 people.
