More health impact assessments are needed for Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) officers because of the increasing mental and physical stresses they are subjected to at the workplace.
This was one of the recommendations of the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights after a review of the FCS annual report August 2016-July 2017.
“The committee was also advised that given the strenuous work conducted by the corrections officers, the executives of the service are consistently working towards the review of the work being undertaken by the men and women of the Fiji Corrections Service and hoping that appropriate incentives be provided,” the report read.
The committee stated since 2016, the FCS had seen “its fair share of ups and downs and like any other institution, also has weaknesses, which it tries to overcome and has made positive strides in this”.
FCS had a staffing strength of 963 with 929 manning prison facilities.
“This is disaggregated into 134 (14 per cent) who are female personnel and 795 (86 per cent) are males.
“The projected difference between the two genders indicates that the FCS is a male dominant institution due to the nature of its operations.”
