The Fiji Girmit Council hosted its annual Diwali celebration at the Girmit Centre on October 30 in Lautoka where more than 250 people gathered to reflect on the significance of the Festival of Lights.
Fiji Girmit Centre manager Selwa Nandan said the event provided a reminder of the festival that highlighted the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness.
“The entire girmit family comprising the members of the Board, Women’s Wing, teachers, students, parents and members of the senior citizens’ club joined together to mark the occasion,” he said.
“The residents of the Golden Age Home were also present as special guests.
“They were presented with Diwali gift packs sponsored by Salvin Kumar and Ashneel Naidu.” Mr Nandan also acknowledged the contribution of guest speaker TISI Maathar Sangam president Anjili Ratnam.
“She highlighted the significance of Diwali festival and the importance of sharing happiness and love especially with the downtrodden, sick and underprivileged members of our community.
“She also stressed that the most meaningful lesson we can learn from Diwali was loyalty and respect for our parents and elders as demonstrated by Lord Rama when he obeyed the orders to serve 14 years in exile.
“He made the sacrifice to keep the promise of his father.”
The event featured a variety of items including songs, dances, poetry and garba for the entertainment of the guests.
